DEVELOPING: The standoff between a suspected gunman and California police moved into its second day as police surround the hotel where he's barricaded with an unidentified woman.
The man, a suspect in the stabbing of a supermarket employee over the weekend, is holed up in the Extended Stay Deluxe hotel in San Rafael. Dozens of guests have been evacuated since Wednesday morning, when the standoff started, KTVU.com reported.
"We're attempting to bring this to a safe resolution," a police spokeswoman told the station. "No one has been injured thus far and we hope to keep it that way."
Three SWAT officers dressed in military fatigues have moved to a nearby roof to gain a better vantage point of the suspect’s room. More law enforcement teams appear to be arriving.
Police say the man fired a shot Wednesday toward a busy highway. The shot prompted police to shut down a portion of the I-580, which was reopened Thursday, according to the report.
KTVU.com reported that the man allegedly removed items from a supermarket Sunday and walked out without paying. He was confronted, and brought back inside the store by employees.
Police told the station that he eventually made a run for it, and was pursued. He allegedly tried to stab one employee, but then stabbed a clerk in the chest. Her injuries were not considered serious, police said.
