My Blue 92

My Blue 92
Not new to forums, not new to all of this. Prior to this I have spent a lot of time on rx7club.com and nopistons.com, when i got stationed in Colorado Springs I got into Jeeps and a lot of the forums on there. After moving down to Texas, my 8mpg 304ci V8 CJ7 wasn't worth keeping haha.
Throughout the last few years I have had a few builds, mostly Honda's because they are cheap and easy (not ricer Honda's, more along the lines of SC'd H22 swaps into a Del Sol, etc). Spent a lot of time around DSMs (my old roommate has a 97 TSi running 10.2 @ 6,000ft and about 39psi). I have owned more RX7's than I can remember.
A few years back I owned a 91 BRG and loved it. Did basic intake/exhaust and thats about it, and drove the hell out of it on back mountain roads.
I recently decided to get back into the Miata scene and perhaps built a little better/smarter than I did back when I was freshly into cars.
My goal with this build is mild hp gains. I have been thinking of either a simple FM or BEGi kit, or perhaps piecing one together with a 14b or something similar. Not looking for major power, just enough to keep it fun.
More so planning on building a car thats a fun to drive DD. More or less a fun cruiser, and something to dick off with when I feel like, nothing crazy.
I am currently deployed, should be getting back in Jan. Just last week had my previously mentioned roommate pick me up a steal I found on CL. Found a 92 blue NA6 for $1500 and talked the guy down to $1300. 100% stock, older gentleman bought it new, car has about 180k but only about 40k on a full rebuild (engine, tranny, rear end).
As for now, I see some Megan Streets, and some XXR 502's in 15x8's in my near future. As far as any other power mods, I will need to figure out if I decide to keep it n/a or switch it to FI, likely FI will come, the question is when.
I am mainly on ClubRoadster.net, a bit of TurboMiata.net but decided to give this place a shot.

Welcome to the forum Sean,
I think you can probably make 150hp N/A with mild modifications. An MSM cam, squaretop, full exhaust, and mspnp + tuning will easily put you above 150hp.
I would say check out my cold air intake write up for the NB, but you are an NA car. You will need to extend your MAF wires to get it done .

-basic intake(through wiper tray)
-header
-high flow cat with full exhaust
-cams (got to look into this MSM cams, are we talking the stock MSM cams? and just my curiosity, Im rocking the 1.6 in my 92 (obviously) and I know that the 1.8 has a longer head/block. Therefor wouldn't the MSM (1.8) cams be too long?)
-adjustable cams (looks and tuning, remember, this car I also want to be aesthetically appealing)
-MSPNP
You mentioned "squaretop" I haven't heard of this or come across it in my research.
Also… this is just a wild idea in the back of my head. But thought about maybe adding a small shot of nitrous (50-75)… I have installed it, used it once or twice, but never actually had it on any of my vehicles… thought about it just our of curiosity honestly. Just that little bit of extra power when I feel like dicking off… this car is supposed to be mostly about "fun" more than anything.

-Squaretop is the JDM/EUDM stock intake manifold. its porting and runners are different, also the port hole to the TB is larger so they flow MUCH better all around and are a solid power adder if you can get your hands on one. they are pricey, running in the $350+ used.
-The MSM cam is intake cam off of a mazdaspeed miata or the stock cam on the 99+ JDM/EUDM miatas.
As for the 1.6L, I think its probably hopeless to try to make power on those while NA. I would just go for a turbo or drop the 1.8 in. If you drop the 1.8L in and can do the complete engine+ECU from a 99, you can do the intake in my sig and not have to cut a hole in your firewall.

Honestly, I'm not looking for crazy power, which is why i didn't mind picking up the 1.6. I think i will do what I can for now, not looking for any specific numbers by any means. But its still a decently high mileage engine overall, so if/when it takes a ---- on me, i would obviously swap in the 1.8. So trying not too get TOO many 1.6 independent mods (i.e.: header) but here and there isn't a big deal. Also another reason i thought about nitrous. There when i want it, gone when i don't really care.

well, the 1.8 swap is easy enough that you can do it in a day with a helping hand. hell a day is probably a bit long. with that said, I don't know how much swapping the ECU will make that difficult. I don't know much about this area, I was lazy and decided to start on the NB platform so I wouldn't have to deal with the NA's problems.
They all have their little quirks though. I am tracking my car, so power isn't really one of my goals (I just want about ~150 whp which is about what PTD/NASA class limits are).
