1993 Miata, new suspension/clutch/brakes/top, more!
1993 Mazda Miata for sale, red (of course). I bought this car to build up for autocross and have done exactly that. I’ve now got E30 fever, unfortunately, so I am putting this car up for sale. I’ll start the build process all over again but with a car that is less reliable, harder to work on and requiring more expensive parts….but I digress.
This is a mid-Atlantic car that has spent its years in Washington, DC, and northern Virginia. I bought the Miata from the third owner in Manassas, Va., in April 2011. After seeing a number of Miatas that were surprisingly rusty, I grabbed this one because of its rust-free chassis and body and relatively clean interior. The car needed a comprehensive going-over but has proven to be a reliable and willing driver and a real treat on the autocross course. Currently has 123,321 miles but this will change as I drive it once or twice a week.
The car was a 12/92 build according to Mazda and has A/C (works great), power steering and power mirrors but manual locks and windows, and a viscous limited slip differential. Has headrest speakers also.
Passed Maryland State Safety and Emissions inspections in May 2011.
Work done since April 2011 and 121,000 miles has included:
•Complete maintenance update including: full timing belt service including front crank seal, water pump, tensioner, idler pulley, and cam seals; CAS O-ring; valve cover gasket; fan, AC and power steering belts; Mazda air filter; NGK BKR6E-11 plugs; Mazda plug wires; Mazda oxygen sensor; AGM Battery from batterymart.com; all cooling hoses (except heater hoses); oil changes using Mobil 1 synthetic and Mazda oil filters; miscellaneous sensors, gaskets and hoses as needed
•Mazda/Exedy clutch kit installed by Raspi’s British Imports on a freshly turned stock flywheel; install included rear main seal and front transmission seal and trans drained and filled with Amsoil GL4 75w90 (including the shift turret)
•New clutch slave cylinder and Flyin’ Miata stainless braided clutch line
•Diff drained and filled with Amsoil GL5 plus friction modifier
•New upper and lower shifter boots, all new shifter bushings and new stock shift ****
•New Robbins premium vinyl top—plastic window with zipper, stock style—plus new tension cables
•New 15x7 Chaparral Wheels, 37 offset, 195-50/15 Yoko S-Drives
•All new calipers (rebuilt) with fresh EBC Greenstuff pads at all four corners; Goodridge stainless steel brake flexible lines
And now the fun stuff…
•Full suspension overhaul using all new parts, specifically: Adjustable Koni Sports with adjustable perches; Fat Cat Motorsports MCU 36/46 strut mounts and bushings (based on NB mounts); Flyin’ Miata adjustable sway bars, front and rear; Racing Beat adjustable endlinks
•Aggressive autocross alignment done by GT Performance in Edgewood, Md., using brand new camber bolts from Mazda (will provide specs to buyer)
•Hard Dog Hard Bar Sport, double diagonals, with Hard Dog custom high density padding and black vinyl cover
•New MOMO Monte Carlo 320mm steering wheel with Works Bell hub adapter and airbag circuit defeat (will include original airbag wheel with sale)
•Moss Motors “R Package” front lip spoiler
So what’s not great about this car?
•Red paint is faded on the hood and tops of front fenders. All panels have the matching Mazda VIN sticker so I suspect this one is victim to long periods of time under a flapping car cover. I was able to get some shine back with a cleaner wax but I suspect a session with an orbital buffer will help tremendously. I got an estimate from Diamond Detail in Cockeysville, Md., to do a full exterior detail and heavy polish for $160 but have yet to get there.
•The driver’s door edge appears to have hit something solid with a fair amount of force at some point. I’ve been told by other Miata owners that this happens when the wind catches the door and it connects with something solid…who knows. See the pictures.
•Needs a radio. The original factory radio is still installed and works intermittently.
In summary:
•Mechanical: 9/10. It’s fully up to date on maintenance and exhibits no issues/stories. I deduct a point for having 123,321 miles on the greasy bits.
•Electrical: 9.5/10. Everything works as it should except the radio.
•Exterior cosmetics: 5/10. Faded paint and assorted dings and dents but it’s a good 10-footer and not embarrassing. No rust, visible or otherwise—and I’ve been everywhere on this car.
•Interior: 8/10. It’s a 19 year old Japanese car with 120k miles. Some of the fabrics are tired but it is clean and rip- and smell-free.
Some people go hunting, some people gamble—I like to do maintenance work and suspension builds on fun cars. This one is ready to go to the next person, who will benefit from my many hours of labor and Internet parts shopping. The car is ready for autocross or track days as it sits—on virtually brand-new components—and the suspension setup I chose gives full adjustability. The A/C is cold and it drives great around town or on the highway. I see about 25mpg but I don’t feather the pedal on the right, either.
If the buyer desires, the Miata will come with a set of original Miata alloys (“daisies”) with worn-out tires, spare flywheel, hood bra, sill plates and a crappy strut bar that probably adds more weight than anything else (somewhere along the line, somebody threw a couple pages of the Moss Motors catalog at this thing) and a generic car cover.
The Miata is located in Monkton, Md., and is available to view by appointment. Clear title is held by me, no liens. Test drives will be accompanied. More than 30 pictures available at Miata for sale pictures by whisperbomb - Photobucket.
